About This Course

Semiconductor English for English Faculty is a professional development course designed for English language instructors who are preparing to teach, support, or co-teach technical subjects—especially semiconductor engineering—in English. As universities move toward bilingual or EMI (English as a Medium of Instruction) programs, English teachers are increasingly called upon to work alongside engineering departments. This course fills the gap.

Using the bilingual textbook Semiconductors Made Simple, participants will learn to confidently navigate the vocabulary, concepts, sentence patterns, and discourse functions commonly found in semiconductor content. The course begins at the fundamental level—no prior background in engineering or physics is required—and gradually builds language mastery alongside technical clarity.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Teach and explain technical terms (e.g., diode, doping, conduction band) with bilingual scaffolding

  • Support students' comprehension of lab procedures, datasheets, and diagrams

  • Use appropriate classroom English for guiding, questioning, summarizing, and checking understanding

  • Collaborate with STEM faculty and co-teach or coach in English-medium classes

  • Adapt ESP (English for Specific Purposes) methods for technical learning

  • Simplify complex ideas into teachable English sentence patterns and visuals

  • Design bilingual worksheets, quizzes, dialogues, and project prompts

The course also explores methods from CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning), TBLT (Task-Based Language Teaching), and CCA (Cognitive-Communicative Approach) to prepare instructors to confidently enter multidisciplinary classrooms.

By the end of the course, English faculty will be able to:

  • Deliver or support lessons on semiconductor basics using clear, accurate English

  • Understand and teach bilingual content from the textbook

  • Facilitate student communication and presentation of technical ideas

  • Design or revise learning materials for technical English programs

  • Serve as an effective language partner for STEM departments

This course prepares teachers to work in EMI programs, interdisciplinary classrooms, or ESP training centers where semiconductor English is part of the curriculum.
